The Look, 1945

Courtesy the Coleman Family

The year was approximately 1945 when Leona Coleman Flu went out fishing on her uncle Warren Riche Coleman’s catboat, also coincidentally named Leona. Her uncle taught her how to fish and how to keep her eyes on the horizon so that she wouldn’t get seasick, she reports. And she was a good student. Once, while out with a number of her uncle’s friends, she was the only one who didn’t get seasick – and the only one to catch any fish that day. One thing her uncle likely didn’t teach her: how to look stylish on the high seas in a classic cloche-style hat, rolled blouse and pants combo, and Keds-style sneakers. No wonder the fish came calling.
