From the Editor

Next year will be the magazine’s twenty-fifth anniversary. As we approach this bench mark, we’ve been looking at how the magazine has changed. We’ve grown to print eight editions annually – five Martha’s Vineyard, two Home & Garden, and one Island Weddings & Celebrations – and we’ve been recognized nationally by our peers in the business.

Many people go online for news and entertainment – find us at www.mvmagazine.com – but our printed pages have staying power. People enjoy leisurely thumbing through, basking in the beautiful photography, and delving into stories about our community, culture, and what makes the Island unique. People put our magazines on their coffee tables and take them to the beach – maybe even keep them in bathrooms.

Those of us who work on our publications live year-round on the Island, and we strive to produce magazines that are geared toward our neighbors, while keeping in mind that seasonal residents and visitors will get an insider’s perspective on everything Vineyard.

We present the beauty of the Island (see our photo essay on Stonewall Beach, page 24), and we also cover serious issues, such as our investigation into how prevalent illegal drugs are (page 34). History is also our forte, especially when it ties into current events – in the article on page 42, we look at what’s happened since the MSPCA closed on-Island this spring and reminisce about the founder of the Edgartown animal shelter, Katharine M. Foote. We also like to sprinkle some fun in every edition, as with our story on the Island’s Yankees fans (page 50).

Through a special promotion on-Island, Vineyarders are getting this issue of the magazine free – a one-time thing. We hope you’ll find it captures the character of the Island. Please let us know what you think.
