From the Editor

I was in Stop and Shop the other day, waiting for the clerk to begin ringing up my groceries, when the gentleman behind me said I should be commended. I was puzzled. It’s always a little embarrassing to have someone else looking at how much candy I’m buying (I wish I could say it’s all for my husband) or how many prepared foods (as if I could prepare everything from scratch). But he was looking beyond the groceries to my pile of canvas bags.

I’ve been bringing my own bags for years, but I don’t think I should be commended for it. Frankly, it’s not all that difficult. I haven’t even purchased reusable bags from a store; I just use tote bags on hand. What was difficult was developing the habit. The man in line said he would like to bring his own bags but didn’t know how to remember. He suggested he could leave the bags in his car – and put them right back after shopping.

His comment made me realize that’s how I made it part of my routine. He also helped me realize that it’s now a habit. If the bags aren’t in the car, I go and get them, like I would coupons or car keys.

When talking and reading about green issues, the idea of making something routine comes up again and again, and that’s what really resonates with me. Throughout the magazine (which doesn’t scream green with every story, by the way), I hope you’ll find some things – be they tips, ideas, philosophies, or resources – that resonate with you.

I’d love to hear about how you’re living green on the Vineyard.
